Gunilla Karlson is a London based Jewellery Designer who is finally bursting onto the European scene with her fresh and unafraid take on silver jewellery. She has honed her skills by doing commissions for the Motorhead Fanclub (as worn by Lemmy and David Grohl) and private clients ranging from heart surgeons to Cornish fishermen! She is also a teacher at Kensington & Chelsea College.
She won the Inspired by Competition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in 2007 and was a finalist for her work with precious metal clay in the same year and shown at Jewellery London, Earls Court.
Before she took up jewellery Gunilla worked in Music Management and Special Events and starred in THE BEACH with Leonardo di Caprio and Tilda Swinton - although one of her more memorable moments as an actress was kissing (12 takes ho ho ho) Paul Whitehouse in the BBC series Happiness! And although this very varied career implies that she is older than the steam engine, she is actually still a spring chicken!!!!!!
Gunilla is inspired by the wish to infuse jewellery with meaning, going back to tribal and Victorian adornment - by making statements through wearing jewellery about who we are (tribe!) in this samey samey global community - about beautifying objects of death to make them less scary and more approachable and celebrate them as part of life.
